Death by Sprout...

Since the Farmer's markets were closing for the year, I stocked up on my last two visits. Besides picking lots and lots of sweet, juicy apples (some of which I used to make this last weekend) and various varieties of winter squash, I also purchased an entire stalk of Brussels Sprouts.

The sprout tree, lounging chez moi

It was kind of an adventure getting the stalk home and I was amused (and saddened) by the number of people who stopped me to ask what it was; further proof of our disconnect with what we eat.

Since I really love these little cabbages I admired my stalk for a day (often stroking it lovingly) and then I cooked up almost half of the little green buds thinking "oh yummy! I'll have sprouts to eat all next week!".

Well I did have them...and more of them, and yet MORE of them. I ate them hot, I ate them cold - I ate them seasoned mild and bold. I ate them cut, I ate them whole...I ate them by the plate and bowl! (Apparently an over abundance of mini cabbages Seussifies one's brain).

I finished the last of them today and I must admit, I am done with them for a while. I cannot face the remaining buds which rest in our crisper.

Alas boys...it is off to the freezer with you!

you remind me that I want to buy a stalk of brussel sprouts for my mothers xmas gift....she'll love it!

(I am less fond of the things, though I find I dislike them less these days, especially if they're nice organic ones! thankfully the recipe for brussel sprout soup with black pepper has vanished from existance!)

Yum! And yeah, seems like most folks don't recognize food that doesn't come out of some kind of container.

I just recently scored a chest freezer on Freecycle, so we're storing away all kinds of veggies and meats for the winter...

Wow! I didn't know that's what a brussels sprout grew on. I think you have psychic vegetables.

M and I were sitting last night, dreaming of what we might grow next year beyond tomatoes, and I said, "I wonder how brussels sprouts grow. I mean, they probably don't grow on trees, they have to grow from the ground, but....how?"

Neato. Though, scary that they seem to promote a Dr. Seussian disease of the brain.....

I always thought stalks of sprouts were kind of alien looking. I'm not fond of them myself but I also don't care for cabbage. However, if they cause one to evoke Seuss I may change my opinion of them.

*LOL* If you begin to wear tall, striped hats or to seek out (local) green eggs and ham...you may want to seek intervention. ;>)

I've promised kenllama to pass along any good sprouts recipes that I have (as I love them - and other brassica as well). I'll ask him to pass them along to you or you can email me (greenjenbyers@gmail.com).

Have fun with the little guys! ~ J
