Happy Midsummer...

But with thy brawls thou hast disturb'd our sport.
Therefore the winds, piping to us in vain,
As in revenge, have suck'd up from the sea
Contagious fogs; which falling in the land
Have every pelting river made so proud
That they have overborne their continents:
The ox hath therefore stretch'd his yoke in vain,
The ploughman lost his sweat, and the green corn
Hath rotted ere his youth attain'd a beard;
The fold stands empty in the drowned field,
And crows are fatted with the murrion flock;

Therefore the moon, the governess of floods,
Pale in her anger, washes all the air,
That rheumatic diseases do abound:
And thorough this distemperature we see
The seasons alter: hoary-headed frosts
Far in the fresh lap of the crimson rose,
And on old Hiems' thin and icy crown
An odorous chaplet of sweet summer buds
Is, as in mockery, set: the spring, the summer,
The childing autumn, angry winter, change
Their wonted liveries, and the mazed world,
By their increase, now knows not which is which:
And this same progeny of evils comes
From our debate, from our dissension;
We are their parents and original.

~ William Shakespeare,
A Midsummer Night's Dream

Clouds and grey are embracing the Hog Butcher for the World today, and it doesn't really feel like Midsummer in Chicago. The rain is good though, our garden needs it and the rain barrels are almost empty.

For some reason I keep thinking of a bit of Titania's speech from Midsummer (above), which keeps weaving itself in and out of a lot of conversations and thoughts I've been having about community.

It is interesting to me to imagine a counterpoint to this scene Titania paints; one that similarly shapes the world through our emotions, intentions and interactions but instead nurtures the warp and weave of the fabric of love that is life itself.

Today, I want to dance barefooted on the ground - stomping and twirling magic, hope and peace into the very soil. I want to feel a hand clasped in each of mine; to turn left and right and look into the eyes of another who wants to live as I do. I want to share homegrown, local, organic fruits with diverse peoples who are awake, aware and empowered. I desire community - one that lives and breathes sustainability, environmentalism and social justice with an oaken spine of honesty and accountability.

Ahhh...Midsummer wishes on a rainy afternoon. May your Solstice dreams be blessed.

Love ~ J
