365 Days of the Poet: Petal 95, "Salt"

Troy Davis, October 9, 1968 – September 21, 2011

In a world that hungers ever more;
innocence murdered, lives lost in vain,
we stand in salt.
Not as Lot’s wife, no,
but as the sea who holds her crystaled children.
The taste of bitter
highlights the savory and the sweet,
brings forth the edge
whose contrast shows us love.

And we must live here if we can,
in the salt of love.

The salt of tears running heavy to lips
blesses the tender kisses of the living.
The salt of meals, for those who can share them,
seasons the table of community; feeds family.
The salt of bodies, claiming joy out of the rubble,
emblazons hope and builds our strength
that we may continue to endure;
that we may remember,
and make change.
