The long ride reaches into night,
yawning blue, then stretching arms to black.
Headlights beam past; disembodied owls’ eyes
shine-sweeping by, swooshing like wings.
Darkness turns the highway
into any other road.
It glazes each town with the anonymity
of any other American town.
It unwraps countless bolts of star-specked, midnight tulle
wrapping them around this journey, place and time.

Soon I am drifting on memories,
road-tripping through my past,
perhaps towards Spring Break in Pensacola
with that one worn cassette that Jody brought;
The Joshua Tree and Violent Femmes
circling round each other for ten Easter-bound hours.
Or further back and north to Ramsey
when I, making a queen’s bed in the backseat of daddy’s Mazda,
would low-hum songs with the engine’s drone,
laying back to track the stars.

Each trip becomes the other
always moving me away, yet towards.
