Everywhere we struggle,
wanting to be bigger, wanting to be smaller.
We cast off titles while grasping for others.
We walk tender and alone ,
even amongst the ones that hold us best.

We push against the world
and cry that it has moved away from us.
We script elaborate prophecies to crushingly fulfill them.
We rage against the greedy machine
as we feed it with identity and our own soul’s flesh.

And all around me,
and inside me
and before me
and sadly, after me,
we fight.

One day I will dissolve,
reduced to ash,
a quirky catalog of souvenirs
and a short list of actions
both sacred and profane.

Will I care then
what the neighbors neighbor thought;
what my bank balance boasted,
who laughed at what in me is ugly
or different, or nothing that my grandfather wanted?

And all around me,
and inside me
and before me
and sadly, after me,
we fear.

When you name me then,
call me not good nor evil.
Call me not white nor black,
not male nor female, not fat nor thin,
no name me not by sex, nor desire, nor creed.

Name me as the sound
of crickets on a southern summer’s night.
Name me as the taste of beauty,
the scent of water, the color of breath;
know me, wholly, as love.

For all around me,
and inside me
and before me
and ever after me,
we love.

Delightful, even by what you have taught me to expect from you. Wow.
