Today's view from my office window

They rejoiced when you washed to shore,
your many arms crusted with salt
as though the ocean, your mother, had been weeping
oe’r your once great and magic form.

Your death they herald as freedom,
as safety for their sails and cargo holds.
They skip around the gathering bonfire,
sharing stories of their long-lost, eaten kin.

I turn from this blind cruelty.
I dig my toes into the warm, receptive sand
and pray that you will swim beyond the stars and into love;
I pray to ease your passage and the wailing of our momma sea.

I am haunted by your stillness,
by the decaying beauty of your rare and cursive corpse
and I wonder if your taste for Argonauts
was really longing and the madness of the lonely.

oh! sad kraken!

I dig my toes into the warm, receptive sand
and pray that you will swim beyond the stars and into love;
I pray to ease your passage and the wailing of our momma sea.

so sweet and sad and I find my soul reaching out to echo that prayer.

You have a gift, my dear
