Yup, they Amazed Me...

Last Friday I went with tarirocks to see one of our favorite bands, Girlyman, at one of our favorite venues Old Town School of Folk Music. It was a great show and one that felt perfectly tailored to me because they a) played a Patty Griffin cover (Mary) and b) picked my request (artfully and loudly posed by myself and T at just the right moment) playing Amaze Me...a tune that has haunted me and my poor guitar for months now.

While being back at Old Town is always bittersweet (I miss my fiddle lessons and cannot afford to pick them up right now) it was wonderful to see live music and to walk home on a warm night, high on the Muse - aching to write my own tunes and serenade the world. While my slow progress often frustrates me, time with the guitar is feeding me more and more these days and I am making more of it (and am daring to play in front of other folks...watch out!). Both tarirocks and artemis112 are inspiring me to push my musical edges...so we'll see.

oh oh oh, lucky you! i'm envious -- we've got to get them to this corner of the world some time. (or perhaps: i need to come visit chicago when they do!) they'll actually be in NE Ohio for Beltane, but it's pretty far away.

i'm excited to hear that you've playing more, and have been working on "Amaze Me" -- i'd really like to sing that with you.

since you introduced me to Girlyman in the fall, I have pretty much always had one or more of their songs rolling around in the back of my head. this week it's been "Everything's Easy", which is such a weird song!

*many joys to you*

"Everything's Easy" is fun...I love the three distinct melodies that then get overlapped...plus the lyric "cinnamon pear" makes me giggle.

I've got "Amaze Me" down so get your harmony ready!

Yum! (I was actually just humming the "cinnamon pear" bit while I was looking for books a few minutes ago.)

I've been working on the "Amaze Me" harmonies, and I'm looking forward to trying them out with you!

*joys*

We LOVE Girlyman!! Kids found them at Bliss Fest a couple years ago and we have been listening ever since.

I didn't know you played guitar.

Any recommendations on learning guitar? One found electric guitar and one long-term-loaned amp and acoustic guitar found their way to our home, which I consider something of a sign.

I played back in college but then dropped it...this past year I've picked it up again and I love it. Old Town has good classes for beginners. You can also check at guitar shops that are in your area...most of them offer classes. Trey (my ex) offers private lessons - but he's in Lincoln Square and I don't know what he charges or what his schedule is like.

Good luck...making music is a wonderful way to access the divine.
