I remember simple summers,
with hard-calloused, dirt-bottomed feet;
heat that ran, ice-cream sticky, down our forearms
tasting of chlorine and watermelon.

I remember the flat of your thumb
pressing the hose pipe’s mouth,
to make a mist umbrella of rainbows
for my joyful squeals.

I remember the green of promise,
sweet in blindness - the peace of fools,
that laid our days upon a wide, white hammock
and seemed a thousand miles from winter.
